Sommelier

Circa 1886, a fine dining restaurant located in the heart of Charleston, SC, is looking for an experienced Sommelier to join our team. A successful Sommelier has an in-depth knowledge of wines, and the ability to quickly recall and share complex information about different types of wines, wine pairings and tasting notes with restaurant guests and staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintaining the wine inventory including selecting and sourcing unique and interesting wines
• Creating and managing wine lists
• Ensure proper wine service techniques including decanting, pouring, and presenting wines at the appropriate temperature
• Suggesting food and wine pairings - guiding guests in selecting wines, answering questions and enhancing the overall dining experience
• Educating restaurant staff on wine knowledge and training on proper service standards
• Maintain industry knowledge and stay current with wine trends
• Supervise front of house staff and operations in the absence of the Restaurant Manager
• Other duties as assigned by management

• Must have a passion for wine and a desire to share that passion and knowledge with others
• Exceptional customer service, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to provide a memorable experience to guests.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage the wine cellar inventory and supervise staff.
• Must adhere to all alcohol handling laws and regulations.
• Must be able to stand for long periods of time, lift heavy cases of wine, and navigate the restaurant floor including climbing stairs.
• Must be available to work evenings and weekends.
• Formal education through the Court of Master Sommeliers or the Wine & Spirit Education Trust is preferred.
