POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a knowledgeable, polished, detail-oriented, and hospitality-driven Sommelier to join the Moss New York team with Compass Group. Sommeliers play a vital role in shaping the guest experience through thoughtful wine service, curated beverage guidance, and elevated tableside presence. This role is essential to maintaining a refined and seamless dining environment, ensuring that every recommendation and interaction reflects our commitment to luxury hospitality. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about wine and service, thrives in a fast-paced fine dining setting, and takes pride in delivering confident, warm, and highly personalized guest experiences.

COMPENSATION:

The hourly wage for this position is $15.00 per hour with tips
Training wage during the orientation period is $17.00 per hour.

CLASSIFICATION:

This is a non-exempt, hourly position. In accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), you are eligible for overtime pay at one and a half times your regular rate for all hours worked over 40 in a single workweek.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to the hours of work/shift system. To be punctual, to arrive in the restaurant at the appropriate time.
  • Maintain the highest standards of personal hygiene and presentation. To arrive on duty always wearing the correct uniform.
  • Ensure mise-en-place in the restaurant and the cellar is performed to the required standard assigned by the Wine Director. Be aware of the weekly cleaning schedule. Do the necessary cleaning duties.
  • Ensure daily, weekly and monthly cleaning duties are carried out.
  • Have a good knowledge of the menu and cheeses. To be able to easily recognise all dishes from the menu.
  • To be able to advice and suggest wines for the menu choices made by guests
  • Up-sell where appropriate.
  • Have full wine knowledge of the Moss wine list.
  • To assist, guide and encourage the service team.
  • Have a good knowledge of the cellar and follow the cellar management procedures.
  • Always smile and be attentive and professional.
  • Achieve guest satisfaction through high quality service and to promote good relations with fellow team members.
  • Immediately inform the Wine Director of any guest complaints or comments.
  • Attend all menu and wine knowledge training and relevant briefing sessions.
  • Know the physical set-up of the restaurant and the flow of service, following the correct standard of service.
  • Be aware of any food and beverage promotions.
  • Comply with and fully understand the laws and regulations regarding licensing, food safety, health and safety, fire equipment and fire training.
  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship with other departments.
  • Comply with any reasonable instruction from superiors and to always work towards achieving the highest possible standards

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of 2+ years serving experience in a high-volume, service-driven restaurant environment; upscale or chef-driven concepts preferred.
  • Flexible availability for AM and PM shifts, including weekends.
  • Strong teamwork, professionalism, and a hospitality-first mindset with excellent communication skills.
  • Genuine interest in seasonal, ingredient-driven cuisine with a willingness to expand culinary and beverage knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of classic cocktails, foundational wine varietals, and beer styles; fine-dining or craft beverage experience a plus.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and composure
